Airbus introduced two "new" models of aircraft A-220

Today we can observe the emergence of a trend that is unusual for the production of airliners in the market - now manufacturers are not only developing new models themselves, but simply buying ready-made (and tested) developments.

Airbus Aircraft Concern at an official ceremony held on July 10 of this year, announced the inclusion in its range of two models of single-bodied aircraft. In fact, “A220” is just a new name for the model “CSeries” from the Canadian concern Bombardier. Significant technical changes will not accompany the name change - this is the first Airbus experience in renaming existing aircraft developed by another airline. Airbus management announced that the Canadian CS100 will be renamed A220-100, and CS300 will become A220-300 - these liners were presented in Toulouse-Blagnac in official Airbus colors. The president of the concern enthusiastically declared at the event: "The A-220 meets all the demands of today's consumers and will bring the company commercial success." Thanks to the introduction of the “A220” into its catalog, Airbus, which until now had sold airplanes with a passenger capacity of 150 to 600 seats, with these “new” narrow-body airliners for 100–160 passengers updated its range.

Aviation market segment: aircraft with a capacity of up to 160 passengers

The new A220s are positioned as models of the “up to 160 seats” segment, and perfectly complement the impression of the Airbus A320neo model, which seats up to 150 passengers and has received recognition from passengers.

Presented "A220‐100" can accommodate from 100 to 135 passengers, in turn, "A220‐300" - a more spacious aircraft, it can carry from 130 to 160 people. The head of the civil aviation unit, Guillaume Fori, called the presentation of the aircraft a historic date:

“It is necessary to thank the staff and partners of Bombardier, who have worked tirelessly for the past few years, to bring this incredible airliner into the light. Today, “A220” is entering a new phase of its development and, thanks to the capabilities of Airbus, will become popular everywhere. ”

Commercial Director Eric Schulz also optimistically confirmed that Airbus, according to all forecasts, expect high sales of new aircraft. Such advantages of “A220” as fuel efficiency and low noise level make them competitive in their segment. Mr. Schulz noted that the numerous positive reviews about A220 allow the company to reasonably hope for the brilliant commercial success of the new models.

Mutual benefit: the distribution of shares and the production of new models

At the end of 2017, the Airbus concern bought out a controlling stake in the CSeries division from Canadians, but the final transfer of Airbus aircraft took place only in July of this year. Now Airbus has a controlling stake of 50.01%, Bombardier has 31%, and the remaining 19% is distributed among private investors.

After completion of the transaction, all rights to manufacture «CSeries», according to the law, transferred to the corporation Airbus. However, by this time 38 of these aircraft were already in operation in several airlines, and it is not quite clear how and by whom their technical support will be provided.

Oleg Panteleev, the head of AviaPort Analytics, assures that the most important thing for Airbus now is to optimize the production and sale of aircraft.

Comfortable and attractive - travelers will appreciate the liner

The A220‐100 and A220‐300 airbuses differ from each other only in passenger capacity: in the first one - up to 135 passengers, in the second - up to 160. Passengers will have their own specifics: one row - two seats each, the other three each. The maximum distance of the flight "A220-100" is 5700 kilometers, "A220-300" can fly more than 6000 kilometers without refueling.

New aircraft are predicting a great future in terms of sales, and besides, the news gave a powerful impetus to the competition in the aviation market. In addition to the very substantial contract between Airbus and Bombardier, which, in essence, united their activities and allowed to expand the line of Airbus airliners, taken aback by the American corporation Boeing, finally became the official partner of the aircraft building conglomerate of Brazil Embraer.

This event makes evident the coming intensification of the struggle in the passenger liner market. However, the flagships of the global aviation market, Airbus and Boeing, will mainly compete with each other, but the competition between them will be more likely to be mediated than direct.

Rumor has it that the first “consumer” of the “A220” will be the Russian airline Red Wings. According to the representative of her leadership:

“There was a statement that the company would additionally acquire other CSeries aircraft, but I believe that this question concerns technical issues, and the name will be different. However, such arrangements do exist. ”

It is still difficult to predict who exactly the new Airbus "A220-100" and "A220-300" will press on the market, as at the moment they are unique in their size. It may be worthwhile to consider the Russian Sukhoi Superjet aircraft, but only under the condition of certain technical changes of the latter, in particular, the lengthening of its fuselage.
